Chemical weapons are generally prohibited by the 1992 Chemical Weapons Convention.
The 1992 Chemical Weapons Convention generally prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, and transfer of chemical agents other than for certain peaceful purposes. Certain riot control agents may be used outside armed conflict in accordance with the international law of law enforcement.
