The Encyclopedia is a project of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights launched on 2 December 2013. The Enyclopedia aims to provide accurate, up-to-date information on weapons, the effects of their use, and their regulation under public international law, in a format that is accessible to non-specialists.
+ Find out moreThe 1972 Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction was opened for signature at London, Moscow and Washington on 10 April 1972. As its title indicates, the Convention prohibits the development, production, and stockpiling of bacteriological and toxin weapons. It does not formally prohibit the use of such weapons, which had already been prohibited, in international armed conflict, by the 1925 Geneva Gas Protocol.
