The 1972 Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction was opened for signature at London, Moscow and Washington on 10 April 1972. As its title indicates, the Convention prohibits the development, production, and stockpiling of bacteriological and toxin weapons. It does not formally prohibit the use of such weapons, which had already been prohibited, in international armed conflict, by the 1925 Geneva Gas Protocol.
